Walking and running are everyday activities for children when small and, as ability and coordination come from repeated practice, such activity is necessary for normal development. As they get older, some children are on the go nearly all the time, when others are sedentary for long period.
Parent should encourage an active lifestyle and, as the child get older, participation in some sporting activity. Exercise improves a child's physical fitness, as well as developing coordination. Team games develop social skills as well as physical skills, and provide a structured introduction to competitiveness. Do, however, make sure the activities is safe, and the child does not become overtaxed. There is a great deal of evidence to support the theory that a moderately active lifestyle promotes health and longevity in adults. The foundations for an active way of life need to be laid in childhood. In an age when many children are taken to school by car, and spend a lot of time watching television, it is important to encourage activities such as walking, cycling and swimming, as well as organized games and sports.
