How much should your child eat?

Both the quantity and type of food taken may be important for health. If too little food is taken, growth will be restricted and children will have little energy. Although common in developing countries, this seldom happen in developed society.

There is a wide variation in the amount of food that children eat, and in the amount that individual children need. Many children cause worry to their parents because they have small appetites. Provided that such children are growing normally they are getting sufficient nourishment. Cessation of growth is one of the body reactions to an inadequate food intake.

Not all fat children  eat excessively, but children who do overeat may become plump. If a child is inclined to be overweight, some regulation of the size of meals, and reduction in snacks between meals may help to prevent the development of obesity.

The timing of meal is largely determined by family habits, but all children should start the day with some breakfast to provide them with energy during the morning.
